Key Gateways: Podgorica and Tivat

Airports in Montenegro are just two international hubs that welcome all foreign visitors. The list is short, but choosing between them is critical for the convenience of your holiday. Podgorica Airport, unofficially called the "Heart of Montenegro," is located 11 km south of the capital, in the village of Golubovci. It is the main, 24/7 international gateway, handling scheduled flights from European capitals. Tivat Airport, or the "Gateway to the Adriatic," is situated just 2.5 km from the city of the same name and primarily focuses on charter flights during the tourist season, operating until sunset. Passenger traffic here in summer is colossal — up to 90% of tourists arrive through it. The main difference determining your choice is geography. Tivat is your option for a quick transfer to the Budva and Herceg Novi Rivieras, while Podgorica is optimal for trips to the southern regions, such as Bar and Ulcinj.

Technical Details and Infrastructure for a Comfortable Transit

From a technical standpoint, both Montenegro's airports meet modern standards, though they differ in scale. The terminal in Podgorica is larger, with an area of 5,500 sq. m. It has two passenger terminals, 8 boarding gates, and serves about 400,000 passengers annually. On-site facilities include a full-fledged business lounge, a mother and child room, a branch of the National Bank, and several cafes. Tivat Airport is more compact (terminal area 4,057 sq. m), with one passenger building and an annual passenger traffic of around 120,000. An important detail: after passing through security in the departure area, there are no cafes, so you need to have a snack beforehand. Both hubs offer key services: online check-in (available 24 hours before departure), car rental right in the arrivals hall (we recommend booking a car in advance), paid parking, taxi stands, and ATMs. Duty-free is available, but the selection, especially in Podgorica, is quite modest.

Logistics and Airport Choice: How to Get to Your Resort

The main question after landing is how to get to your hotel. Here, travel time is everything. From Tivat Airport, the journey to Budva takes just 20-25 minutes (20 km), to Kotor — about 10 minutes (9 km). To Herceg Novi — roughly an hour. Therefore, if your resort is on the coast of the Bay of Kotor or the Budva Riviera, the choice is obvious. From Podgorica Airport, the journey to the sea is longer: to Budva — about 1-1.5 hours, to Ulcinj or Bar — 1-1.5 hours, to Herceg Novi — a full 2 hours. You can arrange a transfer by taxi (price is negotiable, haggling is expected) or by bus. Bus stops are within walking distance of both terminals, with a frequency of approximately 30 minutes, and the ticket price ranges from 2 to 5 euros. For maximum freedom of movement, car rental is ideal. This will not only get you to your destination quickly but also allow you to later embark on a journey along the picturesque coastal roads. Remember the operating hours: for Tivat Airport, you need to arrive at least 2 hours in advance in summer, as it closes in the evening. Podgorica operates 24/7, with the standard check-in time being 1.5 hours before departure.
