ALIEN IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (NIE)
Registration of the NIE in Spain
You will need the NIE number to perform such official procedures in Spain, if you are not a resident of Spain as:
opening a bank account, buying and selling real estate
registration of real estate in the Unified State Register of Ownership
registration with tax authorities and payment of taxes
registration and opening of a company
purchase of vehicles
conclusion of contracts for services (for example: housing and communal services, Internet, etc.)
registration in the social insurance system (for example: to access the health insurance system, receive subsidies/benefits, calculate pensions, etc.)
Spanish legislation establishes a different procedure for obtaining visas for Europeans and for citizens of countries outside the European Union. If you are applying for a visa in Spain, then you need to contact the department that deals with the issuance of visas for non-Europeans and non-residents of Spain (ciudadanos no comunitarios, no residentes). The procedure and timing may also differ for EU and other country nationals.
The process of obtaining the NIE and the necessary documents:
A completed and signed application (solicitud EX-15).
Passport and photocopies of all pages (a valid visa must not be expired).
Payment of the state fee, a receipt form for payment will be given to you upon submission of documents.
Documentary confirmation of the reason for the request (for example: a document on payment of a mortgage for the purchase of real estate and a pre-contract for the purchase and sale of real estate).
When submitting documents by a trusted person, a power of attorney issued by a notary in Spain.
