The National Gallery of London is the main art museum of the country, which houses more than 2 thousand paintings by artists of Western Europe from the XII - early XX centuries.
The date of the gallery's foundation is considered to be 1824, when the Angerstein collection, consisting of 38 paintings, was purchased.
At first, the paintings were exhibited on Pall Mall Street, but already in 1831 the collection grew so much that local authorities were forced to allocate funds for the construction of a new building. In 1838, the construction was completed, the gallery moved to a new location, and on May 9, 1839, the official opening of the museum took place.
The museum never stopped there and continued to buy masterpieces. Now visitors to the gallery can admire paintings by West, Wilkie, Rubens, Canaletto, Titian, Rembrandt and other masters.
