What you need to know before renting a car in Spain?
1. Plan ahead
Planning a trip in advance is never superfluous. You will have time to compare prices and choose the best deals. Offers available in advance often include free services, such as free GPS or an additional driver. In most cases, it is much more expensive to take a car on the spot than to plan in advance.
2. Don't forget to specify your flight
If you are delayed (for example, the plane is delayed), please inform the supplier about it. If the delay is significant, then your car may be canceled, considering your lateness as a know-show or late cancellation. If you book online, you often have the opportunity to add a flight immediately or after you have booked a plane ticket.
3. Write down the contacts of the car rental company
Make sure that you have all the contacts of the supplier at hand in case of an unforeseen situation. In the unlikely event of an accident, do not forget to inform the local rental provider, the one where you received the car. Under the terms of the lease, you need to call the local police and request a report in case of damage to a third party.
4. Check what is included in your insurance
Make sure you understand what is included in the cost of renting a car in Spain, especially insurance fees or exclusions, fuel or other possible local charges, such as airport fees, one-way travel only, surcharges for the "youth of the driver" (if younger than 25 years), etc.
5. Rental liability
Carefully read the additional responsibility. It means the amount that will be withheld from you as an additional payment to the insurance in case of damage. Your basic insurance, in case of damage, will cover the main cost of repairs. But, as a rule, there is always a certain surcharge for any losses caused by the main driver. You need to find out at the time of receipt how much it is. Usually this amount is blocked on your credit card at the time of receiving the car and is unlocked after you return the car to the rental. If the amount is very high, you can reduce it by purchasing additional insurance on the spot.
6 . Rent a car in Spain with full insurance
It is worth considering the possibility of purchasing full insurance, which will not be superfluous if an accident does take place. If, in addition, you also purchase insurance on the spot, covering the difference, then you will completely protect yourself, as well as the deposit on your credit card will be significantly less.
7. Moving from one country to another by car
If you are planning a tour and crossing the borders of different states, then keep in mind that there are fees for border crossings. Be sure to specify at the time of booking what conditions apply to travel involving border crossing, and whether there are surcharges or entry fees.
8. Make sure your documents are in order
It seems obvious, but still check that all your documents are in order: passport, visas, driver's license in the name of the main driver, a voucher for car rental, as well as a credit card in the name of the main driver (there must be funds on the card, in case the supplier takes pre-authorization of the pledge). Do not lose vigilance and do not forget to receive documents on the spot. For example, there have been cases when tourists crossing the border from Italy to Switzerland forgot to pick up a tax receipt at the cash desk. As a result, they had to pay again!
9. Your credit card
This is worth mentioning additionally. The main driver must have a credit card working abroad with him, despite the fact that you can pay for car rental with any card on our booking system. If the driver does not have a credit card, take the bus or get one before the trip! And this is absolutely serious. It must certainly be in the name of the main driver. This is a very important condition. The rental company will most likely refuse to issue the car and consider it as your refusal to book on the spot. There should be a good limit on the card so that the supplier can pre-authorize the collateral. The amount of the deposit varies and will be indicated in the voucher, but on average from 500 to 1500 Euros for the rental period. This amount will be unfrozen after you hand the car back to the rental company.
10. Check the machine when you receive it
Before you get behind the wheel, carefully inspect the car. Carefully examine all scratches and damages and verify that they are recorded in the rental document that you received. Take photos of the scratches if necessary. Naturally, if you find significant damage to the car, inform the rental company immediately.
11 .Fuel
Carefully study the fuel information before you leave the car pick-up point. If under the contract you have to return the car with a full tank of fuel (which, as a rule, is a standard condition) – do not forget to do it. Look for a gas station near the rental point in advance in order to refuel the car on it before putting the car back. Keep in mind: if you forget or do not have time to do it, the rental company will charge you for it with a very large margin.
12.GPS and child seats
To save money on this service, you can bring your own GPS navigator and a child seat, maybe even buy it on the spot. Often it will be cheaper than renting it from a company. For example, a child safety seat can be purchased from 25-50 Euros per seat, while renting it can cost up to 15 euros per day.
13. Check the car yourself at the time of delivery
When handing over a car in Spain, check the car again: is it in the same condition as you received it? If so, take a photo as a last resort, if after your rental it turns out that some scratches or damage have been found. If the damage or scratches were still made by you during the rental, we also recommend that you take photos of all the damage that is not included in the list of the car rental agreement. You must inform the supplier about them at the time of delivery. If you have purchased insurance covering these damages, then you will not have to pay anything. Otherwise, the supplier has the right to charge you for the exceeded risk for dents or scratches caused by the main driver. This amount can be deducted from your deposit, which has been frozen on your credit card. That is why we recommend that you purchase additional insurance.
14. Once again about the obvious
It is not necessary to additionally mention that the insurance is not valid if the driver violates the terms of the lease agreement. This includes cases of negligent driving or drunk driving. If the driver was involved in an accident under these circumstances, then the payment of all costs falls entirely on the driver and will not be covered by insurance.
