What happened. The Mayor's office of one of the most visited Italian cities by tourists has imposed a ban on short-term rental of apartments and rooms. However, there are several exceptions to the general rule.
Firstly, it concerns only the central part of Florence, where about 40 thousand people live and the main attractions are concentrated, including the famous Ufizzi Gallery. The location, by the way, is included in the list of historical heritage and is protected by UNESCO.
Secondly, we are talking about a ban on delivery through booking services. The law has already been called "anti-Airbnb". It is assumed that by personal agreement with the guest, no one forbids anything.
Thirdly, the innovation concerns only those owners who have not earned money by renting housing until now. Those who already rent out their real estate will be able to continue to do so.
Reasons. The reason for the officials was excessively, in their opinion, a large number of apartments put up for rent on AirBNB – more than 14 thousand. Because of this, permanent residents are inconvenienced, and it is almost impossible to rent a house for a long time.
Context. In March, a similar ban was imposed by the authorities of Swiss Lucerne. And not even on their own initiative, but according to the results of the referendum. Now the owner can rent out his object for a short period of no more than 90 days a year.
Similar restrictions apply in other major cities. All this forced the Airbnb management to think about changing the concept.
