Northern Cyprus is preparing for a historic event - the opening of the Russian consulate on its territory. This will be a significant step in the development of diplomatic relations between Russia and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
The leader of the TRNC, Ersin Tatar, announced the start of work on the opening of a Russian consulate in the region. According to him, this event could happen by the end of 2023. This step underscores the desire of both countries to strengthen their relations and provide convenience for Russian citizens living in Northern Cyprus.
Previously, Russian citizens staying in the TRNC had to apply for consular support through the "Cooperation House" in Nicosia, which is located in the neutral zone, uniting Northern and Southern Cyprus. This place performed an important function, providing communication between Russian citizens and consular services.
In August 2023, the Russian Embassy in Cyprus began accepting Russians living in Northern Cyprus on certain days. This has already improved citizens' access to consular assistance and received a positive assessment from the local population.
A future with vast prospects
The opening of the Russian consulate in Northern Cyprus opens up new horizons for cooperation and exchange between the two countries. With the expansion of Ercan Airport and the possible opening of direct flights from Russia, the number of Russians permanently residing in the TRNC may increase significantly. According to various estimates, from 15 to 50 thousand Russian citizens currently live here.
The opening of the Russian consulate in Northern Cyprus is an important step in strengthening relations between Russia and the TRNC, as well as in ensuring the comfort and protection of the rights of Russian citizens in this region. This step opens up new opportunities for cooperation and exchange, which will certainly contribute to the development of relations between these two countries.
