The Juan Ponce de Leon Museum in Punta Cana is dedicated to the Castilian colonizer, the conqueror of the island of Puerto Rico and the discoverer of Florida. The museum is located in de Leon's fortress house, built in such a way that the thick walls of the house protected its owner from attacks by the local Tain tribe.
The house was renovated in 1970. Now a collection of antique furniture is on display here, as well as numerous antiquities found in the Punta Cana area.
In the museum you can learn interesting facts from the life of Juan Ponce de Leon, who was governor of the Dominican Republic from 1509 to 1513, was close to King Ferdinand the Catholic and was friends with Christopher Columbus.
