FEDA shows interest in increasing avocado production in the Dominican Republic
The Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA) has shown interest in increasing the production of Dominican avocado and promoting it as an agroecological and sustainable production, similar to the production of cocoa and coffee, which allows to increase the income of producers, diversify crops and improve the impact of this crop on the environment.
Hecmilio Galvan, Director of FEDA, announced at the First Avocado Festival in Sabana Larga de Ocoa that they will develop a training and support project through which avocado growers will be able to improve plantations, obtain collective certification, achieve better marketing, diversify crops, and integrate beekeeping as an important method of pollination, among others initiatives.
For these reasons, the institution celebrated the festival of this fruit in San Jose de Ocoa with the assistance of hundreds of people seeking to promote the cultivation and consumption of avocados nationally and internationally, in addition to supporting the avocado packaging machine project that the institution intends to build in this province.
The avocado Festival, held from September 29 to 4 this month as part of the feast of the patron saint Saban Larga, in the province of San Jose de Ocoa, was organized by the municipality's Mayor's office with the support of the provincial government, FEDA, Ecotourism Cluster and CONFENAGRO, among others.
During the 5 days of the Avocado Festival, a program of talks and seminars was held on various specific topics related to the production of this fruit, the history of the municipality of Sabana Larga and topics related to entrepreneurship, cooking shows and tastings with avocado as a base and cultural presentations, among other events.
Hecmilio Galvan; Milton Brea, Mayor of Saban Larga; Jose Armando García, Regional Manager of Valdesia; Eduard Medina, Regional Manager of Agriculture; Juan Celestino, President of the National Avocado Cluster; Ada Martinez, President of the Organizing Committee of Fiesta de Patronales, and Francisca Maceo were present at the honorary table of the opening ceremony of the event,
